Description
Château Palmer 2022 is a distinguished Margaux red from one of Bordeaux’s most admired estates, celebrated for combining remarkable elegance with depth and longevity. Classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 classification, Palmer has long been regarded as a wine of exceptional refinement—often performing at a level well beyond its official ranking. The estate takes its name from British officer Charles Palmer, who acquired the property in 1814 and helped establish its reputation for quality.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 vintage displays a deep, vibrant ruby colour with purple highlights. Its aromatic profile is expressive and complex, offering layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe plum alongside violets, rose, graphite, cedar and subtle spice. With time in the glass, more savoury nuances and an elegant mineral character emerge.
On the palate, Château Palmer 2022 is concentrated yet remarkably poised, combining velvety tannins with fresh acidity and a generous, beautifully layered texture. Dark berry fruit is complemented by hints of cocoa, liquorice, tobacco and finely integrated oak. The finish is long, precise and persistent. Although approachable with decanting, this is a vintage built for extended cellaring and should develop considerable complexity over the next 20–30 years, under suitable storage conditions.
Production
The estate is situated on the celebrated Margaux plateau, where deep gravel soils provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to produce wines of aromatic finesse, structure and mineral precision. Château Palmer follows a carefully considered, sustainable approach to vineyard management, with attention to the wider ecosystem surrounding the property. Grapes are harvested selectively by parcel at optimal maturity, then vinified with precision to preserve the character of each plot. The wine is matured in oak, allowing its powerful fruit, tannins and perfume to integrate gradually while retaining the elegance associated with Margaux.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gently up to temperature. A decanting period of two to three hours is recommended for the 2022 vintage, particularly when enjoyed young. Its structure and depth make it a natural partner for roast lamb, beef fillet, venison and other game, as well as dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms or richly flavoured hard cheeses.
Producer
With origins reaching back to the 17th century, Château Palmer became especially influential after Charles Palmer purchased the estate in 1814. He invested in new facilities, a dedicated winery and modern equipment, helping to shape the property’s early identity. Although the cost of his ambitions eventually forced him to sell in 1843, the estate was recognised among Bordeaux’s leading wines in the 1855 classification. Since 2004, under the management of Thomas Duroux, Château Palmer has continued to strengthen its international reputation while pursuing a thoughtful and increasingly sustainable vision for the estate and its surroundings.
