Description
Château Palmer 2020 is a remarkable Margaux red from one of Bordeaux’s most admired estates, celebrated for combining the perfume of Cabernet Sauvignon with the velvety depth of Merlot. Classified as a Troisième Cru in the 1855 classification, Château Palmer is widely regarded as one of the region’s leading “super seconds.” Its history stretches back to the 17th century, while its name comes from British general Charles Palmer, who acquired the estate in 1814 and helped establish its modern identity.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Château Palmer displays a deep, brilliant purple colour. Its aromatic profile is exceptionally expressive, revealing blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe plum alongside violet, rose petal, cedar, graphite and subtle sweet spice. With time in the glass, hints of tobacco, cocoa and finely integrated oak add further complexity.
On the palate, the wine is rich yet remarkably poised, with a broad, silky texture and concentrated layers of dark fruit. Refined tannins provide structure without overpowering the wine, while fresh acidity gives energy and length to the finish. The 2020 vintage has the concentration and balance to develop beautifully over several decades; it is approachable with careful decanting, but will reward cellaring from approximately 2028 through 2050 and beyond.
Production
Château Palmer’s vineyards lie on the gravelly plateau of Margaux, where deep Günzian gravel soils provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to develop both concentration and finesse. The estate’s blend typically brings together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, with the exact proportions determined by the character of the vintage. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified parcel by parcel, allowing the winemaking team to preserve the identity of each plot. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak, including a significant proportion of new barrels. Château Palmer is also recognised for its progressive sustainable and biodynamic approach to vineyard management.
Food & Serving
Serve Château Palmer 2020 at 16–18°C. It is a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, duck breast and beef tenderloin, as well as earthy preparations featuring mushrooms or truffle. Decant for around two to three hours when serving young to allow the wine’s fragrance and texture to open; older bottles should be decanted more gently, primarily to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Palmer is one of the defining estates of Margaux, with a history that reaches back centuries and a reputation built on elegance, longevity and distinctive terroir. Charles Palmer purchased the property in 1814, investing heavily in its vineyards, buildings and winemaking facilities before financial difficulties led to its sale in 1843. The estate was recognised as a Third Growth in the 1855 classification, and later owners continued to elevate its standing. Since Thomas Duroux took over management in 2004, Château Palmer has pursued a thoughtful, increasingly sustainable approach while preserving the estate’s signature style: richly textured, aromatic and exceptionally refined Bordeaux.
