Description

Château Palmer 2012 is a refined Margaux red renowned for combining the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the silkiness of Merlot. From one of Bordeaux’s most admired estates, this vintage offers the elegance, aromatic complexity and graceful structure that have made Palmer a benchmark for the appellation. Although classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification, it is widely regarded as one of the leading “Super Seconds” of Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-red colour with youthful garnet tones. Its expressive nose reveals blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside violet, rose petal, cedar, graphite and subtle spice. On the palate, it is poised and full-bodied, with polished tannins, vibrant acidity and a layered texture. Dark fruit gradually gives way to floral, mineral and gently savoury nuances, while the finish is long and refined. Château Palmer 2012 is approachable with decanting, but its structure and concentration allow it to develop beautifully over the next 15–20 years, depending on storage conditions. Further bottle age should bring greater aromatic harmony and more pronounced tertiary notes of tobacco, leather and undergrowth.

Production
The vineyards lie on the gravelly plateau of Margaux, where well-drained soils encourage deep-rooted vines and help produce wines of both concentration and finesse. The 2012 grand vin was made predominantly from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small proportion of Petit Verdot. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested parcel by parcel before gentle, plot-specific fermentation and maturation in French oak, allowing the character of the estate and vintage to remain at the forefront. Château Palmer is also known for its long-standing commitment to sustainable and biodynamic vineyard practices.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to rest at room temperature. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours when serving now, particularly if the wine is enjoyed in its youth; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, if at all, to preserve their delicate aromas. Its structure pairs especially well with roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Château Palmer’s history reaches back to the 17th century, while its name comes from the British officer Charles Palmer, who acquired the estate in 1814 and invested heavily in its buildings, winery and vineyards. The property’s gravel-rich plateau soon became recognised for producing wines of remarkable elegance. Since 2004, under the management of Thomas Duroux, Château Palmer has continued to strengthen its reputation while pursuing a thoughtful, increasingly sustainable approach to viticulture. Its 1855 classification and enduring status among Margaux’s most prestigious estates underline its importance in Bordeaux.
