Description
Château Palmer’s Historical XIXth-Palmer 2020 offers a distinctive interpretation of the Margaux style, inspired by the rich, generous blends made in the nineteenth century. Produced by one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, it combines the elegance of the Margaux terroir with a fuller, more traditional character and the refined balance for which Château Palmer is renowned.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with garnet highlights. Its bouquet is expressive and layered, revealing ripe dark berries, blackcurrant and plum alongside floral notes, subtle spice and hints of cedar. On the palate, it is polished and well-structured, with concentrated fruit, supple tannins and a fresh mineral lift that brings definition to the finish. The 2020 vintage offers both immediate appeal and the structure to develop further in bottle over the medium to long term.
Production
Château Palmer is situated on the celebrated gravelly plateau of Margaux, where well-drained soils and the region’s maritime climate help produce wines of finesse, perfume and balance. Historical XIXth-Palmer is inspired by the style of nineteenth-century Bordeaux, when blends were often shaped by a broader balance between the estate’s traditional grape varieties. The grapes are carefully selected and harvested at optimum ripeness, then vinified with precision to preserve freshness, aromatic complexity and the distinctive character of the château’s terroir.
Food & Serving
Enjoy this Margaux red with roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck or richly flavoured mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting for around one to two hours is recommended when drinking the wine young, while older bottles may benefit from gentler decanting to remove any sediment without overexposing the wine to air.
Producer
Located in the prestigious Margaux appellation, Château Palmer has a history dating back to the seventeenth century. The estate takes its name from the British general Charles Palmer, who acquired it in 1814 and invested heavily in its buildings, winery and vineyards. His ambition helped establish Palmer as a leading Bordeaux property, and the estate was recognised among the region’s finest wines in the 1855 Classification. Since Thomas Duroux took over its management in 2004, Château Palmer has continued to develop its vineyards and winemaking with a strong focus on sustainability and respect for its surrounding environment.
