Description

Alter Ego de Palmer is the second wine of Château Palmer, but it carries the estate’s signature depth and refinement in a style that feels very much Grand Cru in ambition. Made from younger vines and with a more restrained use of oak, the 2017 vintage delivers a powerful yet polished Margaux with plenty of structure and remarkable ageing potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet-purple colour, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is vivid and expressive, opening with black raspberry, black cherry and crushed blackcurrant, layered with subtle notes of Sichuan pepper, menthol, pencil lead and cardamom. The palate is medium-bodied but charged with energy, offering bright, precise black fruit wrapped in firm, fine-grained tannins. There is a long, lively finish that balances freshness and structure beautifully, suggesting excellent ageing potential over the coming years.

Production
Alter Ego de Palmer is sourced from younger vines at Château Palmer in Margaux, Bordeaux, where gravelly soils and the estate’s carefully managed parcels contribute to the wine’s finesse and depth. For this cuvée, the estate uses a selection designed to express purity and immediacy, with less time in new oak than the Grand Vin. In 2017, the blend is composed of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, vinified with the precision and biodynamic approach that define the estate today.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, game birds and mushroom-based dishes, as well as truffled dishes or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine’s aromatics and structure to open fully.

Producer
Château Palmer is one of the most admired estates in Margaux, with a reputation that places it among Bordeaux’s elite and often in direct conversation with Château Margaux. Its history dates back to 1814, and since the 1960s the estate has been known for producing wines of exceptional consistency and longevity. Under Thomas Duroux, who joined as manager and winemaker in 2006, the château has become a benchmark for biodynamic viticulture and continues to earn widespread acclaim for the quality and character of its wines.
