Description
Château Nenin Pomerol 2021 is a refined Right Bank Bordeaux that captures the elegance and precision of this cooler, classic vintage. Crafted from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown on the prized Pomerol plateau, it offers a poised balance of ripe fruit, freshness and finely etched tannins. Long regarded as one of Pomerol’s benchmark estates, Château Nenin marries traditional craftsmanship with meticulous vineyard work to produce a wine of depth, structure and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château Nenin Pomerol 2021 shows a deep garnet core with violet reflections and a bright, youthful rim. The nose opens with layers of black cherry, ripe plum and cassis, supported by notes of graphite, cedar, violets and a touch of cocoa and baking spice from barrel aging.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a supple, polished texture and a spine of fresh acidity characteristic of the 2021 vintage. Merlot brings generous, velvety dark fruit, while Cabernet Franc adds lift, floral perfume and a subtle, savory edge. Fine-grained tannins frame flavors of blackberry, redcurrant, mocha and a hint of tobacco, leading to a long, graceful finish with mineral tension. Enjoyable in its youth after a bit of air, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of truffle, leather and forest floor over time.
Production
Château Nenin’s vineyards lie on the renowned clay-gravel soils of the Pomerol plateau, a mosaic of terroirs that includes deep clay, gravelly ridges and pockets of sand, all contributing to the wine’s layered character. The estate’s 32 hectares are planted primarily with Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc, and are farmed with a strong focus on parcel-by-parcel management to respect each soil type. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting in the winery to ensure only the healthiest fruit is used. Vinification follows a classic Bordelais approach: fermentation in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatic purity and precision, followed by aging in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to build texture, finesse and complexity while keeping the fruit and terroir expression at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Château Nenin Pomerol 2021 is a versatile partner for refined dishes, pairing beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, veal chops and game birds, as well as truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and aromatic complexity. Young vintages benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfurl; as the wine matures, a gentle decant to remove any sediment just before serving is sufficient.
Producer
Château Nenin is one of Pomerol’s historic estates, with roots stretching back to the 19th century and a reputation for producing wines of substance and longevity. In 1997, the property was acquired by Jean-Hubert Delon, whose family also owns the esteemed Château Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien. Under the Delon stewardship, Château Nenin underwent a major restructuring: vineyards were carefully replanted and reorganized, the cellar modernized, and a more rigorous, quality-focused philosophy was implemented. Today, Nenin is regarded as a reference point in Pomerol, known for its classically styled, ageworthy reds that faithfully express the plateau’s clay-gravel terroir and stand proudly among the leading wines of the appellation.
