Description
Chateau Musar 1980 is one of Lebanon’s most iconic red wines, a mature and collectible bottle that showcases the estate’s distinctive style and the character of the Bekaa Valley. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan, it combines power, complexity, and remarkable longevity in a way that has helped make Chateau Musar a reference point for fine wine from the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby color with the gentle evolution you would expect from a wine of this age. The bouquet is layered and expressive, unfolding with black fruits, spice, leather, and tobacco, while time in bottle has likely added earthy, savory nuances and a subtle tertiary depth.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, with well-integrated tannins and a long, persistent finish. The wine’s structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential, though at this stage it will be at its best for immediate enjoyment, where its complexity and mature harmony can be fully appreciated.
Production
Chateau Musar is produced in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, a high-altitude region known for its warm days, cool nights, and ideal conditions for ripening Bordeaux and Mediterranean varieties. The wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan, and is aged for at least 30 months in oak barrels, a process that contributes to its depth, texture, and ability to mature gracefully over decades.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for game dishes, roasted beef, and well-aged cheeses, where its savory complexity and firm structure can shine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about an hour if the bottle is showing youthful tension or sediment; for a fully mature vintage like 1980, a gentle decant may also help reveal its aromas more clearly.
Producer
Chateau Musar is the legendary family estate founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar and now associated with some of Lebanon’s most celebrated wines. Based in the Bekaa Valley, it has earned international recognition for producing age-worthy reds with a distinctive identity, even through difficult periods in the country’s history. Today, the estate remains one of the most respected names in the Middle East wine world.
