Description

Château Mouton-Rothschild’s Le Petit Mouton 2023 is the estate’s highly regarded second wine, offering an accessible introduction to the Pauillac style while retaining the château’s signature precision and pedigree. Produced from carefully selected young-vine parcels and lots, it combines the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the supple character of Merlot. Le Petit Mouton was first introduced in 1993 and has since become one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after second wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-purple colour. Its nose is expressive and polished, revealing aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by cedar, graphite, violets and subtle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet refined, with ripe dark fruit, fresh acidity and finely grained tannins. A mineral, lightly smoky character adds depth to the long, balanced finish. While approachable in its youth after some aeration, the 2023 Le Petit Mouton has the structure to develop further complexity in bottle. It should drink well over the next 8–12 years, with careful cellaring allowing the fruit to evolve towards more pronounced tobacco, cedar and savoury notes.

Production
The grapes are sourced from the gravelly soils of Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where excellent drainage and the region’s maritime climate favour Cabernet Sauvignon and produce wines with both concentration and freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing its tannins and fruit to integrate while preserving the elegance and mineral character associated with Mouton-Rothschild.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gently to temperature. Decanting for approximately 1–2 hours is recommended when enjoying the wine in its youth; older bottles should be decanted carefully to remove any sediment without over-aerating them. Its structure and dark-fruited character make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck, grilled ribeye and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, situated in Pauillac in the Médoc. Acquired by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1922, the château became a First Growth in the 1973 classification, a historic elevation that recognised its exceptional quality. The estate is also celebrated for its artist-designed labels, commissioned from leading artists since 1945, and remains one of the defining names of the Left Bank.
