Château Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2022

Château Mouton-Rothschild’s Le Petit Mouton 2022 is the château’s distinguished second wine, offering a more approachable expression of the Pauillac estate while retaining its hallmark depth and precision. Produced from the same exceptional vineyards as the Grand Vin, it combines ripe Cabernet Sauvignon fruit with polished tannins and the refined character for which Mouton-Rothschild is renowned. Le Petit Mouton was first introduced in 1993 and has since become one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after second wines.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the 2022 vintage opens with an expressive nose of cassis, blackberry and black cherry, complemented by hints of violet, cedar, graphite and subtle spice from oak maturation. The palate is full-bodied yet fresh, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, well-integrated oak and finely polished tannins. A mineral, savoury finish adds length and complexity. It is enjoyable with decanting in its youth, but has the structure to develop gracefully over the next decade or more.

Production
The wine is sourced from Mouton-Rothschild’s gravelly vineyards in Pauillac, where deep Günzian gravel soils provide excellent drainage and encourage deep-rooted vines. The 2022 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop texture, aromatic complexity and the characteristic Pauillac balance of power and freshness.

Food & Serving
Le Petit Mouton 2022 pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison and other richly flavoured red meats. It also complements duck, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C and decant for 1–2 hours when drinking young to allow its fruit, floral notes and structure to open fully.

Originally classified as a Deuxième Cru in the 1855 Classification, it was elevated to Premier Cru status in 1973, becoming the only estate ever promoted within the classification.
