Château Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2021

Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is the second wine of the legendary Château Mouton-Rothschild, offering an accessible introduction to the estate’s Pauillac style while retaining its hallmark elegance and structure. The 2021 vintage reflects a cooler, classic Bordeaux year, with freshness, balance and refined tannins at its core.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by cedar, graphite, violet and subtle spice. On the palate, it is polished and medium to full-bodied, combining ripe dark fruit with refreshing acidity, fine-grained tannins and a gently smoky, mineral finish. While approachable in its youth after some aeration, the 2021 Le Petit Mouton has the structure to develop further in bottle. It should drink beautifully over the next 8–12 years, with careful cellaring allowing the fruit, oak and savoury notes to integrate further.

Production
The vineyards of Pauillac are defined by deep gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to develop concentrated fruit while retaining freshness. Grapes are traditionally harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, allowing the dark-fruited character and firm structure of the vintage to gain polish without losing the precision associated with Mouton-Rothschild.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. It is a natural partner for roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck and other richly flavoured meat dishes, as well as roasted mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. Decant for around 30–60 minutes when serving young to open the aromas and soften the tannins; older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.
