Description
Château Mouton-Rothschild 2023 is a prestigious Pauillac First Growth, celebrated for its powerful Cabernet Sauvignon character, remarkable structure and exceptional ageing potential. Since its elevation to Premier Cru Classé status in 1973—the only château promoted in the original 1855 classification—it has stood among Bordeaux’s most iconic estates.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, concentrated ruby colour with youthful purple highlights. Its aromatic profile combines blackcurrant, blackberry and plum with refined notes of cedar, graphite, violets and subtle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and impressively layered, balancing ripe dark fruit with firm, polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish.
Still in its early youth, the 2023 vintage offers both intensity and precision. With careful cellaring, it should develop greater aromatic complexity and savoury depth over several decades, reaching its finest expression from approximately 2035 onwards, depending on storage conditions.
Production
The vineyards of Château Mouton-Rothschild lie on the gravelly terraces of Pauillac, where deep, well-drained soils encourage the Cabernet Sauvignon vines to develop exceptional concentration and structure. The grapes are harvested by hand in carefully selected parcels and undergo meticulous sorting before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then matured in the château’s French oak barrels, allowing its tannins, fruit and oak character to integrate gradually.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to temperature. Decant for around two to three hours when drinking young, or open carefully with minimal aeration once mature. Its depth and structure make it an excellent partner for roast or grilled beef, rack of lamb, venison, duck with a rich sauce, and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in the early eighteenth century, Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of the most renowned estates in Bordeaux. Located in Pauillac, it is distinguished by its gravel soils, powerful Cabernet-led wines and distinctive tradition of commissioning a celebrated contemporary artist to design each vintage’s label. The estate’s promotion from Deuxième Cru to Premier Cru Classé in 1973 marked a historic moment in Bordeaux and confirmed its position among the region’s greatest producers.
