Description
Château Mouton-Rothschild 2023 is a distinguished Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé and one of Bordeaux’s most iconic wines. Since its promotion to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, Mouton-Rothschild has combined deep-rooted tradition with an uncompromising focus on terroir, precision and expressive power. Each vintage is also celebrated with a distinctive artist-designed label, reflecting the estate’s long-standing connection between fine wine and the arts.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep garnet-red colour with subtle purple highlights. Its refined, precise nose opens with ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, gradually revealing delicate notes of pastry, dark chocolate and fine confectionery. On the palate, it is powerful yet silky and harmoniously composed, with perfectly integrated tannins that bring both energy and elegance. Graphite, cedar, roasted hazelnut, cocoa and a discreet smoky nuance add further depth, while the exceptionally long, mineral finish carries the unmistakable signature of classic Pauillac.
This is a structured yet polished vintage with remarkable balance and concentration. It promises outstanding longevity and should evolve gracefully over several decades, developing greater aromatic complexity and savoury nuance with bottle age.
Production
The wine is produced at Château Mouton-Rothschild in Pauillac, where the estate’s terroir is expressed through carefully selected parcels and rigorous grape selection. The grapes are harvested parcel by parcel before fermentation takes place in oak vats and stainless-steel tanks. The final assemblage is then created with great precision, after which the wine matures for approximately 22 months in 100% new French oak barriques. This traditional élevage contributes to the wine’s pronounced structure, layered complexity and considerable ageing potential.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to come gently up to serving temperature. Given its youth, decanting for around two to three hours is recommended to help the wine open and soften its tannins. It will pair beautifully with premium grilled or roasted beef, rack of lamb, venison, game birds and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Mature hard cheeses can also complement its depth and savoury character.
Producer
Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, situated in the Pauillac appellation and owned by Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA. The château has played a significant role in shaping the identity of modern Bordeaux, uniting centuries of winemaking heritage with progressive viticulture and highly precise vinification. Its elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973 marked a historic achievement, while its annual artist labels have made each vintage a unique meeting point between wine and contemporary art.
