Description
Château Mouton-Rothschild 2022 is a distinguished First Growth from Pauillac, celebrated for its commanding structure, aromatic complexity and remarkable longevity. Since its historic promotion to Premier Cru Classé status in 1973, Mouton-Rothschild has stood among Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates, with each vintage also featuring a specially commissioned artwork on its label.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in appearance, the 2022 vintage opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry, complemented by violet, cedar, graphite and subtle spice. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, combining ripe dark fruit with finely polished tannins, fresh acidity and the mineral character typical of Pauillac. Hints of dark chocolate, tobacco and well-integrated oak emerge on the long, persistent finish.
This is a powerful yet balanced wine with considerable cellaring potential. While it may be enjoyed after careful decanting, its depth and structure suggest that it will develop beautifully over several decades, rewarding patience with greater aromatic complexity and softness.
Production
The vineyards of Château Mouton-Rothschild are planted on the deep gravel terraces of Pauillac, where excellent drainage and the Gironde’s moderating influence help the vines achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then matured in the château’s own new French oak barrels, allowing the ripe fruit, tannins and oak spice to integrate during élevage.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Château Mouton-Rothschild 2022 is a natural match for refined, richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, venison and other game, as well as truffle-based preparations and mature hard cheeses. Decant for around two to three hours when serving young to allow the wine’s aromas to open; older bottles generally benefit from gentler decanting to remove sediment without excessive aeration.
Producer
Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most renowned estates, situated in the Pauillac appellation of the Médoc. The property became a Premier Cru Classé in 1973 under Baron Philippe de Rothschild, an exceptional recognition that made it the only estate promoted after the original 1855 classification. Its distinctive artist-designed labels, uncompromising vineyard and cellar standards, and consistently ambitious wines have secured its enduring significance in Bordeaux and around the world.
