Description
Château Mouton-Rothschild 2022 is a prestigious First Growth from Pauillac, celebrated for its remarkable power, refinement and long-term ageing potential. The estate is particularly renowned for its grand tradition of commissioning a different contemporary artist to design each vintage label—a tradition that has made Mouton one of the world’s most recognisable wines. Following its historic promotion from Second to First Growth in 1973, it remains one of Bordeaux’s most coveted wines.
Tasting Notes
Deep, opaque purple in colour, the 2022 opens with an intense and complex bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite and cedar, layered with hints of violet, cigar box and finely judged oak. The palate is powerful yet remarkably polished, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, vibrant acidity and a dense, finely grained tannic structure. Subtle notes of dark chocolate, spice and pencil lead add further depth as the wine develops in the glass.
This is a youthful, tightly coiled Mouton with the structure to evolve beautifully over several decades. While approachable after extended aeration, it will reward patience and should develop increasing aromatic complexity from the mid-2030s, with the potential to mature well into the 2050s and beyond when carefully cellared.
Production
The vineyards of Château Mouton-Rothschild lie on the deep Günzian gravel terraces of Pauillac, where excellent drainage and the proximity of the Gironde help Cabernet Sauvignon reach full maturity while retaining freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in separate lots according to parcel and grape variety. Following fermentation and maceration, the wine is matured in the château’s cellars, traditionally in new French oak, allowing the powerful fruit and tannins to integrate gradually. The 2022 blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Food & Serving
With its concentration and structure, this wine is an excellent match for prime rib, roast lamb, venison and other richly flavoured game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with beef tenderloin, truffle-seasoned preparations and mature hard cheeses. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant for at least two to three hours when drinking young; older bottles should be handled carefully and decanted shortly before serving to remove any sediment without losing aromatic delicacy.
Producer
Founded in the early 18th century, Château Mouton-Rothschild has become one of the defining estates of the Médoc and a symbol of Bordeaux’s grandest wines. Its elevation to Premier Cru Classé in 1973 was an unprecedented recognition of the estate’s exceptional quality and achievement. Today, Mouton is known not only for its outstanding Pauillac wines, but also for its distinctive label-art series, which has featured works by internationally celebrated artists including Picasso, Chagall, Warhol and Jeff Koons.
