Description
Château Mouton-Rothschild 2021 is a First Growth Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates. This refined vintage combines the estate’s signature Cabernet Sauvignon character with the freshness and precision of a challenging but rewarding growing season. Since its promotion to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, Mouton-Rothschild has stood among the most prestigious names in the Médoc.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the 2021 opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry, complemented by cedar, graphite, violets and subtle spice. The palate is elegant and focused, with vibrant acidity, finely grained tannins and concentrated dark-fruit flavours. Hints of tobacco, pencil lead and dark chocolate emerge on the long, persistent finish.
The wine’s structure and freshness give it excellent ageing potential. It is approachable with decanting, but will develop greater complexity over the next 15–25 years and can mature well beyond that under suitable cellaring conditions.
Production
The wine is produced from Château Mouton-Rothschild’s gravel-rich vineyards in Pauillac, where well-drained soils encourage deep-rooted vines and naturally concentrated fruit. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes are harvested selectively by hand, then carefully vinified parcel by parcel in the estate’s modern winery before maturation in French oak barrels, including a significant proportion of new oak.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison and other richly flavoured game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom preparations and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours when enjoying the wine young to allow its aromas and texture to open; older bottles should be decanted gently and briefly, primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Founded in the early 18th century, Château Mouton-Rothschild is located in Pauillac in Bordeaux’s Médoc. It became a Premier Cru Classé in the 1973 reclassification, the only estate to be promoted since the original 1855 classification. The château is also renowned for its distinctive annual labels created by leading modern artists, reinforcing its unique place at the intersection of fine wine, culture and design.
