Description
Château Mouton Rothschild 2006 is one of Bordeaux’s great first-growth wines, combining prestige, power, and remarkable longevity in a single bottle. From its historic Pauillac estate on the Médoc peninsula, it shows the depth and refinement that have made Mouton Rothschild one of the most celebrated names in fine wine. The 2006 vintage is especially notable for its intensity, purity, and long aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep opaque purple color, hinting at the concentration within. The nose is layered and expressive, with classic Mouton aromas of blackcurrant, blueberries, flowers, and subtle oak spice, gradually opening to reveal even more complexity with air.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, yet impressively precise, with rich cassis fruit, firm but refined tannins, and excellent clarity. It is a wine built for the long haul, and while already impressive, it is best appreciated with patience; secondary nuances will continue to emerge over many years. The 2006 vintage has the structure and balance to age for decades.
Production
Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, on the Médoc peninsula of Bordeaux, where the vineyards sit on deep gravel soils that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate covers around 90 hectares, with vines planted densely and an average age of roughly 44 years. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, with the final composition adjusted according to the character of the vintage.
Harvesting and vinification are handled with meticulous care by a highly experienced team, from vineyard management through to cellar work and blending. The château combines traditional expertise with modern technology, and élevage is carried out in carefully selected oak barrels, with toast levels adapted to the vintage to best preserve the wine’s purity and fruit expression.
Food & Serving
This is a wine that pairs beautifully with premium dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck breast, or truffle-infused cuisine. It also works very well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 2 hours if opening now, as it will benefit from aeration and time to unfold.
Producer
Founded in 1853 when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the estate, Château Mouton Rothschild was transformed into one of Bordeaux’s most iconic properties under Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who took control in 1922. He pioneered key innovations such as estate bottling and the tradition of commissioning artists to design each vintage label, helping shape Mouton’s legendary status. In 1973, the château was elevated to Premier Cru Classé status, a historic recognition of its quality and influence, and today it remains one of the most admired estates in the world.
