Description

Château Mouton Rothschild 2003 is a benchmark Bordeaux from one of the most celebrated estates in the world. Classified as a Premier Cru Classé and famed for its artist labels, it combines power, pedigree, and unmistakable Pauillac character in a wine built for the long haul.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2003 shows a dense purple core with the deep, compact look you expect from a top-class Mouton. The nose is layered and intense, with dark cassis, ripe blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and hints of cocoa and warm spice. The palate is full-bodied, muscular, and firmly structured, with powerful tannins and impressive depth. It opens beautifully with aeration, revealing meaty, dark-fruited flavors and a long, dry finish. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, and while it can be enjoyed today with patience and air, it should continue to evolve gracefully for many years.

Production
The estate lies on the famed Plateau de Mouton in Pauillac, on deep gravel soils that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and highly prized for producing structured, ageworthy Bordeaux. The vineyard is densely planted and carefully managed, with meticulous attention paid to each stage of the growing season to ensure low yields and concentrated fruit. Harvesting is done parcel by parcel according to ripeness, and vinification is handled with precision by an expert technical team. The final blend is assembled to reflect the character of the vintage, with Cabernet Sauvignon typically taking the lead and supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot to add breadth, softness, and complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, ribeye, game, duck, or dishes with truffle, mushrooms, or rich Bordeaux-style sauces. Serve at 16-18°C and decant for several hours if drinking young, as the wine benefits greatly from air to soften its tannins and reveal its full aromatic range.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild was purchased by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853 and later transformed into a global icon by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who introduced estate bottling and the now-famous artist-designed labels. The château was elevated to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, a long-awaited recognition of its quality and prestige. Today, it remains one of Bordeaux’s most admired estates, known for its craftsmanship, innovation, and extraordinary consistency across generations.
