Description

Château Mouton Rothschild 2000 Jeroboam is an iconic First Growth Bordeaux, presented in a grand format that underlines both its prestige and long-term collecting appeal. From one of Pauillac’s most celebrated estates, this vintage combines Cabernet Sauvignon-led power with the kind of depth, artistry, and pedigree that have made Mouton one of the most admired names in fine wine history.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, concentrated ruby core with the gravitas expected of a top-class Pauillac from a benchmark vintage. The nose is layered and complex, unfolding with crème de cassis, black cherry, cedar, graphite, violet, coffee, earth, and dark chocolate, all framed by classic noble oak and firm structure. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and classically muscular, with ripe black fruit wrapped in firm tannins and a long, resonant finish. Cabernet Sauvignon drives the wine’s precision, intensity, and age-worthiness, while Merlot adds softness and length. Though already impressive, this is a wine built for decades of evolution and has excellent aging potential well into the future.

Production
Château Mouton Rothschild is based on the Plateau de Mouton in Pauillac, on the Médoc peninsula, where deep gravel soils over sand and clay provide ideal drainage and heat retention for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard benefits from its proximity to the Gironde, which helps moderate temperatures and support slow, even ripening. The estate is planted at high density, with a strong emphasis on meticulous vineyard work and selection. Harvesting and vinification are carried out with exceptional precision by a highly experienced team, with each stage of production closely monitored from vine to bottle. The final blend for this vintage is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, reflecting the estate’s tradition of Cabernet dominance and the character of the year. In true Mouton fashion, the wine combines power, refinement, and remarkable consistency.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for classic, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, ribeye, venison, truffle-infused dishes, or slow-braised beef. Mature hard cheeses can also work beautifully, but the wine deserves center stage. Serve at 16–18°C, and for a Jeroboam of this caliber, decanting several hours in advance is recommended to allow the wine to open gradually and show its full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild was purchased by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, but its modern legend was shaped by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who took over in 1922 and transformed the estate into one of the most famous in the world. He introduced château bottling, expanded the cellars, and established the now-famous tradition of commissioning original artwork for the label. Promoted to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, Mouton stands as one of Bordeaux’s great triumphs and a benchmark for Pauillac, today carried forward by the Rothschild family with the same ambition and prestige.
