Description

Château Mouton Rothschild 1995 is a superb example of First Growth Bordeaux: powerful, refined, and built with the kind of depth that has made Mouton one of the most celebrated estates in the world. This vintage shows the estate’s signature blend of concentration, elegance, and longevity, with a pedigree that traces back to the Rothschild family and Mouton’s historic elevation to Premier Cru Classé in 1973.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, 1995 Mouton Rothschild shows an opaque purple core, suggesting impressive concentration and youthful depth even with age. The nose is layered and initially reserved, opening to aromas of cassis, truffle, coffee, licorice, and spice. The palate is full-bodied and densely structured, with rich mid-palate texture, superb purity, and firm tannins that give the wine real authority. Compared with the more muscular 1996, the 1995 is often described as slightly fleshier and more accessible, yet it still has the backbone to age gracefully for decades. Anticipated maturity: 2004–2030.

Production
Château Mouton Rothschild is located on the famed Plateau de Mouton in Pauillac, on deep gravel soils over the Médoc’s classic terroir of gravel, sand, and clay. The estate’s old, closely planted vines are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and small amounts of Petit Verdot contributing complexity and balance. In 1995, the blend was 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Merlot, reflecting the estate’s emphasis on structure, aromatic depth, and longevity. Harvest and vinification are carried out with meticulous precision, from vineyard work through to blending and bottling. Mouton’s team selects the best parcels and handles each step with exceptional care, combining traditional expertise with modern technical control to preserve purity and the distinctive character of each vintage.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for classic, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, venison, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and truffle-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours, especially if opened relatively young for a wine of this stature.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild was established in Pauillac in the mid-19th century when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the estate in 1853. Under Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the château became one of Bordeaux’s most iconic names, pioneering in-château bottling and introducing the famous artist label tradition that remains part of its identity today. Promoted to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, Mouton is now regarded as one of the greatest and most collectible wines in the world.
