Description
Château Mouton Rothschild 1986 is one of Bordeaux’s true greats: a powerful, age-worthy Pauillac from a First Growth estate with a history that has helped shape modern fine wine. Built on deep gravel soils and crafted with meticulous care, it shows the depth, structure, and prestige that have made Mouton one of the most celebrated names in the world of wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it is typically dark, opaque and concentrated, with a youthful depth that has long been a hallmark of the vintage. The nose is layered and complex, offering blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, tobacco, dried herbs and polished oak, with the sort of restraint and intensity that signals serious Bordeaux pedigree.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with firm tannins, concentrated dark fruit and a long, persistent finish. This is a wine built for the long haul: while already impressive, it is known for exceptional aging potential and can continue to evolve beautifully for decades, gaining complexity, nuance and silkier texture over time.
Production
Château Mouton Rothschild lies on the gravelly plateau of Pauillac in Bordeaux, where poor, well-drained soils and proximity to the Gironde help produce wines of great concentration, freshness and longevity. The estate is planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with vines cultivated at high density and tended by highly skilled teams throughout the season. The grapes are harvested with great care and vinified using precision to preserve the character of each parcel before the final blend is assembled according to the vintage.
Food & Serving
This wine is best enjoyed with refined dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck breast or truffle-driven plates, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant well in advance if opening now, especially to allow its structure and aromatics to open fully. For a wine of this stature and age, careful decanting is recommended to separate any sediment and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild was acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, but it was Baron Philippe de Rothschild who transformed the estate into a global icon through innovations such as château bottling and artist-designed labels. Elevated to Premier Cru Classé status in 1973, Mouton is today one of Bordeaux’s most distinguished First Growths, admired for its consistency, ambition and cultural influence. The estate remains in the Rothschild family and continues to stand at the very top of the region’s winemaking hierarchy.
