Description

La Dame de Montrose 2023 is the second wine of Château Montrose, offering an earlier-drinking and more approachable expression of one of Saint-Estèphe’s most distinguished estates. Made with the same care as the Grand Vin, it combines expressive red and dark fruit with the estate’s hallmark freshness, mineral character and refined structure. The cuvée has been produced since 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who led Château Montrose from 1944 to 1960.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, attractive colour, followed by an expressive bouquet of red cherries, cassis, raspberries and ripe plums. Floral nuances, subtle spice, graphite and a finely integrated oak note add complexity without overshadowing the fruit. On the palate, La Dame de Montrose 2023 is supple and silky, with a graceful balance between ripe fruit, lively acidity and elegant tannins. The finish is long, refined and mineral, with the freshness of the Saint-Estèphe terroir remaining clearly apparent. More accessible than the Grand Vin in its youth, it can be enjoyed now with a little aeration, while its structure should allow it to develop beautifully over the medium term.

Production
La Dame de Montrose comes from the historic Château Montrose estate, a property of approximately 95 hectares in Saint-Estèphe. The grapes are vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, allowing each vineyard section to be handled with precision. Following fermentation, the wine matures for 12 months in French oak barriques, 30% of which are new. Selection is focused on elegance, expressive fruit and earlier accessibility, while maintaining the quality standards associated with the Grand Vin.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Its supple tannins and fresh, mineral profile make it a natural partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, game birds, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not essential for immediate enjoyment, but a short decant of around 30–60 minutes can help the wine open and reveal its floral and mineral nuances.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the leading estates of Saint-Estèphe and was classified as a Deuxième Cru in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate’s second wine, La Dame de Montrose, has been produced since 1983 and represents, on average, 40–45% of the château’s total production. It is named in honour of Yvonne Charmolüe, whose leadership of the property from 1944 to 1960 remains an important part of Montrose’s history. Today, the cuvée provides an accessible introduction to the estate’s distinctive terroir and signature style.
