Description

Château Montrose 2023 is a powerful yet finely detailed Saint-Estèphe, combining the estate’s characteristic structure with remarkable freshness and precision. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, Montrose is one of Bordeaux’s most distinguished estates, renowned for expressing its exceptional terroir through meticulously selected parcels and uncompromising winemaking.

Tasting Notes
Deep and intense in appearance, the 2023 opens with an expressive bouquet of blackcurrant and cassis, complemented by violet, graphite and subtle spice. On the palate, it is deep, layered and remarkably precise, with concentrated fruit, ripe tannins and a pronounced freshness that gives the wine energy and definition. The finish is long, mineral and persistent, bringing together richness and tension in a highly harmonious style. Despite its approachable balance, this is a wine built for longevity. Its concentration, freshness and structured tannins suggest excellent aging potential over several decades, with further complexity expected to develop in bottle.

Production
The 95-hectare Château Montrose vineyard forms one rare, uninterrupted estate in Saint-Estèphe, with terroir that lends the wine both power and a distinctive mineral character. Following a rigorous selection, each grape variety and parcel is vinified separately to preserve its individual expression. The wine undergoes both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation before aging for 18 months in French oak barriques, 60% of which are new. The final blend is assembled with the aim of expressing the purest possible interpretation of Montrose’s terroir.

Food & Serving
Pair this structured Bordeaux with roasted or grilled beef, lamb, venison and other richly flavoured game dishes. It also works beautifully with braised short ribs, truffle-seasoned preparations and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, and consider decanting for two to three hours when enjoying it young to allow the aromas and layers to unfold. Older bottles should be decanted more carefully, primarily to separate the wine from any sediment.

Producer
Château Montrose stands among the leading estates of Saint-Estèphe and has held the prestigious Deuxième Grand Cru Classé status since 1855. Since Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired the estate in 2006, substantial investment has been made in sustainability, precision viticulture and the complete modernisation of the property. The estate’s philosophy remains focused on maximum terroir expression, achieved through meticulous parcel selection, separate vinification and a strict quality threshold that ensures only the finest fruit becomes part of the Grand Vin.
