Description

Château Montrose 2018 is a powerful and refined Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Second Growth estates. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon and shaped by the estate’s gravelly riverside terroir, it combines impressive concentration with the structure and freshness expected from a great Montrose. The château’s history dates back to the early 19th century, and its wines are renowned for their remarkable longevity.

Tasting Notes
Deep, almost opaque purple in colour, the wine opens with aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, layered with graphite, cedar, violets, tobacco and subtle spice. The palate is full-bodied and intensely flavoured, with densely woven tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, mineral finish. Despite its power, the 2018 vintage shows excellent balance and precision, with the fruit gradually revealing greater complexity as it matures. This is a classic cellar wine with considerable aging potential. It can be enjoyed from around 2028 with decanting, but should continue to develop beautifully through 2045 and beyond under good storage conditions.

Production
The vineyards of Château Montrose lie on a south-facing gravel ridge overlooking the Gironde estuary. These deep gravel soils provide excellent drainage and retain heat, while the clay beneath helps maintain water reserves during warm, dry periods. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is traditionally matured in French oak, with a significant proportion of new barrels, allowing the powerful fruit, tannins and mineral character to integrate over time.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to temperature. Young bottles benefit from two to three hours of decanting, while mature vintages may require gentler handling and a shorter decant. Its structure and depth make it an excellent partner for roast beef, grilled or braised lamb, venison, game birds and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Hard, mature cheeses also make a natural accompaniment.

Producer
Founded in 1815, Château Montrose takes its name from the pink-flowering heather that once covered the hillside above the Gironde. The estate is one of the most distinguished properties in Saint-Estèphe and was classified as a Deuxième Cru in the 1855 Classification of Médoc wines. Known for its rigorous vineyard work, meticulous winemaking and consistently long-lived wines, Montrose has become a benchmark for the appellation’s powerful yet elegant style.
