Description
Château Montrose 2017 is a distinguished Saint-Estèphe red from one of Bordeaux’s most revered Second Growth estates. Built around the château’s hallmark Cabernet Sauvignon structure, it combines power, freshness and mineral depth, offering the classic, long-lived character for which Montrose is renowned.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by graphite, cedar, violet and subtle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and focused, with concentrated dark fruit, firm but polished tannins and a fresh mineral finish typical of Saint-Estèphe.
The 2017 vintage shows both intensity and elegance, with the structure to develop beautifully in bottle. It can be enjoyed after decanting now, while further cellaring should allow the fruit, oak and savoury nuances to integrate over the next 15–20 years or more under suitable conditions.
Production
The vineyards of Château Montrose lie on deep gravel terraces overlooking the Gironde estuary, whose influence helps moderate temperatures and supports slow, even ripening. The estate’s vines are harvested by hand, with parcels and grape varieties vinified separately to preserve their individual character. The wine is then matured in French oak, including a significant proportion of new barrels, before blending and bottling.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich, savoury dishes such as roast beef, lamb, venison, grilled entrecôte and braised short ribs. It also works well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C and decant for one to two hours when drinking young; older bottles should be decanted carefully to remove sediment while preserving their aroma.
Producer
Château Montrose is a historic estate in Saint-Estèphe, established in the early nineteenth century and named for the pink-flowering heather that once covered the hillside. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in the 1855 classification, it is widely regarded as one of the appellation’s benchmark producers. Its wines are celebrated for their combination of depth, precision, age-worthiness and distinctive gravelly, mineral character.
