Description

La Dame de Montrose 2019 is the second wine of Château Montrose, the renowned Saint-Estèphe estate classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification. Produced with the same meticulous standards as the grand vin, it offers an earlier-drinking expression of Montrose’s gravelly terroir, combining ripe fruit, refined structure and classic Médoc character. Delivered in an original wooden case of six bottles.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with garnet highlights. Its expressive nose opens with ripe dark cherries and blackcurrants, followed by leafy herbs, tobacco and a subtle note of damp earth—a distinctive hallmark of Saint-Estèphe. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and elegantly textured, with silky tannins, balanced freshness and a long, graceful finish. The 2019 vintage is approachable now with aeration, yet has the structure to develop further in bottle. According to Jeb Dunnuck, it should evolve nicely over approximately 10–12 years, gaining additional savoury and tertiary complexity as it matures.

Production
The vineyards of Château Montrose form a rare, continuous 95-hectare estate overlooking the Gironde, with warm, well-drained gravel soils over a clay subsoil. This combination allows the vines to retain access to water during dry periods and is particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 blend consists of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Grapes are harvested by hand and undergo both mechanical and manual double sorting before gentle pressing. Fermentation is followed by a 25-day, temperature-controlled maceration, after which the wine matures for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels, 30% of them new. Château Montrose continues to invest in sustainable practices, including extensive solar installations designed to support energy self-sufficiency.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe for 30–60 minutes. Decanting is recommended for the young wine, both to soften its structure and to release its aromatic depth. Its combination of ripe fruit, savoury notes and polished tannins makes it an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, grilled ribeye, duck, game birds and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the leading estates of Saint-Estèphe, standing alongside Château Cos d’Estournel among the appellation’s most prestigious properties. The estate’s foundations date back to the late 18th century, when it was separated from Château Calon-Ségur, and it was classified as a Second Growth in 1855. Its 95 hectares have remained remarkably intact since the classification, allowing the individual parcels to be managed as one coherent vineyard. Montrose is especially known for powerful, concentrated wines built around Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by the softer texture of Merlot and the aromatic lift and spice of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
