Description

Château Montrose 2009 is the estate’s grand vin, a highly sought-after Saint-Estèphe classified growth known for its power, precision, and remarkable ageability. Built from a rigorous selection at every stage of production, it reflects both the intensity of the vintage and the timeless refinement that has made Montrose one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated names.

Tasting Notes
Deep, almost opaque ruby in the glass, the 2009 opens with a layered bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, mulberry, forest floor, damp earth, crushed stone, and subtle floral notes. As it develops, hints of cedar, graphite, and spice emerge from the oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with abundant yet sweet tannins, impressive structure, and a long, mineral-driven finish that combines richness with classic Saint-Estèphe restraint. This is a wine with exceptional aging potential. While already impressive in its depth and harmony, it is built to evolve for decades, with the structure to reward long cellaring and the complexity to continue unfolding well into mid-21st century maturity.

Production
Château Montrose lies on a rare single-block 95-hectare estate in Saint-Estèphe, where gravelly soils over clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, the backbone of the vineyard. The site’s continuous, unified layout allows for careful parcel-by-parcel monitoring and precise vineyard management. For the 2009 vintage, the blend draws primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small portion of Petit Verdot, and the wine was matured for 18 months in French oak, 60% of it new.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with rich, structured dishes such as ribeye steak, lamb saddle, duck confit, roasted game, or beef Wellington. It also works well with truffle-infused dishes and hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 2–4 hours if drinking young; older bottles may still benefit from a gentler decant to open their aromatics.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe and a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, with origins dating back to the late 18th century when it was separated from Château Calon-Ségur. Often mentioned alongside Cos d’Estournel as part of the appellation’s top tier, the estate has earned a reputation for producing deeply concentrated, ageworthy wines admired by critics worldwide. Legendary vintages such as 1982, 1990, and 2009 have further cemented its status among Bordeaux’s elite.
