Description

Château Marquis d'Alesme 2019 is a striking Margaux from one of Bordeaux’s oldest estates, with origins dating back to 1585. Following a major restoration completed in 2015, this small but ambitious property has firmly established itself among the region’s elite, combining historical pedigree with a polished, modern expression of Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby to purple color, hinting at its concentration and ripeness. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with ripe dark cherries, blackberries, mulberries, violets, cedar, leafy herbs, and a subtle earthy note that suggests truffle and graphite. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy, and expansive, with generous fruit framed by polished but noticeable tannins. There is excellent depth in the mid-palate and a long, balanced finish, with the oak lending structure, spice, and a touch of grip. While it should drink beautifully over the next 15–20 years, it is already impressive for its purity and balance.

Production
The grapes come from about 40-year-old vines planted on the lieu-dit Les Terrasses de Margaux, where well-draining gravel soils rest over layers of sand, limestone, and silica. The estate is relatively small by Bordeaux standards, producing around 50,000 bottles from roughly 15 hectares, allowing for careful vineyard work and a focused selection of fruit. Vinification follows a semi-traditional approach using a combination of oak and concrete. The wine is aged for 18 months, with 50% new oak, and the first three months are spent on the lees, helping to build texture and complexity while preserving freshness.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for classic Bordeaux pairings such as roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, or game with a rich sauce. It also works beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening in its youth to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open up.

Producer
Château Marquis d'Alesme has a long and eventful history in Margaux, with roots going back more than four centuries. The estate underwent a major revival after Hubert Perrodo acquired it in 2006, and despite his tragic death the following year, the work continued under his daughter’s leadership, with Marjolaine de Coninck guiding the winemaking. Today, the château is widely regarded as one of Margaux’s rising stars, known for its elevated quality, careful restoration, and increasingly impressive international reputation.
