Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Malartic Lagravière Rouge shows a deep garnet-ruby color with a youthful sheen at the rim. The nose opens with pure blackcurrant and ripe black cherry, followed by notes of plum, graphite, cedar, cigar box, and a touch of violet and smoked earth typical of Pessac-Léognan. Subtle hints of cocoa, baking spice, and pencil shavings emerge with air. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, precise and layered, with juicy black fruits, red currant, and a core of cassis wrapped in fine-grained, chalky tannins. There is a lively, refreshing acidity that keeps the wine focused and vibrant, while well-integrated oak adds complexity without dominating. The smoky-mineral Graves signature runs through the long, elegant finish. Already approachable with a decant, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 12–20 years from vintage, developing more tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and tobacco over time.

Production
Château Malartic Lagravière sits on one of Pessac-Léognan’s prime gravel outcrops, with deep Günzian gravels over limestone and clay providing excellent drainage and a naturally low-yielding environment for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and preserve fruit integrity. In the cellar, the lots are vinified separately in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for precise extraction tailored to each parcel and variety. After fermentation and maceration, the wine is aged in French oak barrels—often around 50–70% new—for roughly 18–20 months, with careful élevage to refine the tannins and integrate the oak while retaining the purity of fruit and the estate’s distinctive mineral character.

Food & Serving
This 2015 Pessac-Léognan pairs beautifully with classic roasted or grilled lamb, entrecôte steak, duck breast, beef Wellington, and game birds, as well as earthy dishes like mushroom risotto or roasted root vegetables. It also works well alongside aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère, or mature cheddar. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and fully open up the bouquet; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment.

Château Malartic Lagravière traces its origins back to the 18th century and takes its name from the Count Hippolyte de Malartic, an admiral in the French navy. Located in Léognan, it is one of the few Bordeaux estates classified for both red and white wines in the 1953 Graves classification, underlining its historic importance in the region. Since the late 1990s, under the ownership of the Bonnie family, Malartic Lagravière has undergone significant investment in vineyard management and state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, elevating quality to the highest level. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the reference estates of Pessac-Léognan, consistently producing finely crafted, terroir-driven wines that age gracefully and reflect the elegance and smoky-mineral character of Graves.
