Description

Chateau Lynch-Bages Pauillac 2020, classified as a 5ème Cru Classé yet long regarded as a “super second”, is a powerful and polished expression of modern Pauillac. Sun-ripened concentration meets vibrant freshness and finely tuned acidity in this standout vintage. Ripe, muscular tannins echo the depth and structure seen in the estate’s acclaimed 2018 and 2019 releases, promising both early pleasure and long-term cellar potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Lynch-Bages shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue, with a dense, almost inky core that hints at its intensity and youth. The nose opens with classic Pauillac notes of blackcurrant and blackberry compote, layered with graphite, cigar box, cedar and crushed stone. With air, more nuanced aromas arrive: hints of violets, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and a subtle savory, smoked-meat edge. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and wonderfully structured, combining sun-kissed black fruit with a vibrant line of acidity that keeps everything precise and energetic. Ripe cassis, black cherry and plum are wrapped in firm yet refined tannins, which are powerful but already exceptionally well-knit. Notes of pencil lead, espresso, cedar spice and a touch of dried herbs add complexity through the long, persistent finish. This is a wine built for aging: while it will start to show well after 6–8 years, its balance of fruit, acidity and tannin suggests it will evolve gracefully for 20–30 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Chateau Lynch-Bages is situated on the gravelly plateau of Bages, just outside the village of Pauillac, overlooking the Gironde estuary—classic left-bank terroir where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide perfect drainage and stress for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020 blend is composed of approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, each parcel harvested separately at optimal ripeness, typically by hand to ensure careful bunch selection in the vineyard. After meticulous sorting, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or concrete vats, with gentle extraction to build structure without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new), where it completes malolactic fermentation and develops its hallmark depth, complexity and polished tannic frame before final blending and bottling at the château.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Pauillac is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: roast lamb with herbs, braised or grilled beef, veal in red wine sauces, slow-cooked stews and game birds such as pigeon or pheasant. It also shines with darker cuts of pork, savory poultry dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. For lighter summer fare, try it alongside well-seasoned, not overly spicy grilled meats. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both structure and aromatics. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold; as it matures, a shorter decant or careful splash-decanting just before serving will be sufficient.

Producer
Chateau Lynch-Bages takes its name from Count Jean-Baptiste Lynch, who inherited the historic Domaine de Bages in 1749, anchoring the estate’s legacy in the heart of Pauillac. Classified as a 5ème Cru Classé in 1855, Lynch-Bages has long punched above its official ranking and is frequently described as a “super second” for its consistently high quality and stature among Bordeaux collectors. The 90 hectares of vineyards, located a stone’s throw from the town of Pauillac with sweeping views over the Gironde, have been under the stewardship of the Cazes family since 1974. Under Jean-Michel Cazes, and now his son Jean-Charles Cazes, the château has become one of the most respected names in the Médoc, renowned for producing dark, concentrated, fruit-rich wines with remarkable aging capacity—wines that epitomize the power and elegance of great Pauillac.
