Description
Les C des Carmes 2020 is the second wine of Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, offering an accessible introduction to the estate’s distinctive Pessac-Léognan style. Crafted with the same attention to detail as the grand vin, it combines the appellation’s gravelly freshness with the aromatic lift and refined structure for which the château is known.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the 2020 vintage opens with inviting aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet, cedar and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins, fresh acidity and a polished texture. Dark berry fruit remains at the centre, followed by hints of graphite and gentle oak. This is a youthful wine that can be enjoyed now with some aeration, while also offering approximately 8–12 years of development in a well-kept cellar.
Production
The estate’s vineyards lie within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, where gravelly soils over clay and sand help provide both drainage and freshness. Les C des Carmes is produced under the château’s careful, parcel-focused approach, with grapes harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified separately before blending. The wine is matured in a combination of oak vessels, allowing its fruit, structure and mineral character to integrate without overpowering the blend.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the wine to breathe. A short decant of around 30–60 minutes is recommended for the 2020 vintage, particularly when enjoyed young. Its balance of ripe fruit and refined tannins makes it a natural match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, grilled mushrooms and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of the historic estates of Pessac-Léognan, with origins dating back to the 16th century, when the Carmelite monks received the property. Today, the château is recognised for combining deep Bordeaux heritage with a modern, precision-led approach to winemaking. Its compact vineyard, distinctive contemporary cellar and growing reputation for elegant, Cabernet Franc-influenced wines have made it one of the most closely watched estates in the appellation.
