Description
Château Les Carmes de Haut-Brion is a distinctive Pessac-Léognan red from one of Bordeaux’s most remarkable urban vineyards, located within the city of Bordeaux and close to the Garonne. The estate combines a historic name—linked to the Carmelite monks who once owned the property—with a highly modern approach to winemaking, focused on precision, freshness and terroir expression.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage opens with an attractive deep colour, followed by aromas of red and dark berries, delicate floral notes and subtle spice. On the palate, it is refined and finely balanced, with lively acidity, polished tannins and a precise, mineral structure that gives the wine both energy and length.
Its freshness and well-integrated tannins make it approachable with decanting, while the underlying structure suggests excellent cellaring potential. Stored in suitable conditions, it should develop greater aromatic complexity and savoury depth over the next decade or longer.
Production
The vineyard lies in the heart of Bordeaux, within the city walls and near the Garonne. Its soils combine gravel, clay and sand, contributing both drainage and a distinctive mineral character. Under winemaker Guillaume Pouthier, who has overseen the estate’s style and vinification since 2013, fermentation is carried out partly with whole grape clusters in a combination of wooden vats, concrete tanks and stainless steel. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, including some new oak, alongside concrete and amphora vessels to preserve precision and freshness.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C with roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, duck, venison and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with classic Bordeaux-inspired cuisine and mature hard cheeses. Decant for around 1–2 hours when serving young to allow the floral and mineral nuances to open; older bottles may require gentler handling and only a brief decant.
Producer
Château Les Carmes de Haut-Brion is a historic estate in Pessac-Léognan, named after the Carmelite monks who were associated with the property. Its rare location within Bordeaux’s urban boundaries and its small, distinctive terroir give it a unique position in the region. Since Guillaume Pouthier took responsibility for the estate in 2013, Château Les Carmes de Haut-Brion has become particularly noted for its precise, fresh and contemporary interpretation of Bordeaux, combining traditional regional character with innovative vinification and maturation techniques.
