Description
Château Les Carmes de Haut-Brion 2021 is a refined Pessac-Léognan red from one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive urban estates. Situated within the city of Bordeaux, close to the Garonne, the château combines a historic setting with a modern, precise approach to winemaking under Guillaume Pouthier, who has guided the estate since 2013.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby colour, with an expressive nose of red and dark berries, lifted floral notes and subtle spice. On the palate, it is elegant and finely detailed, balancing vibrant acidity with polished tannins and a precise, mineral structure. The 2021 vintage’s freshness makes it approachable with air, while its concentration and balance should allow it to develop gracefully over the medium to long term.
Production
The estate’s vineyards lie within Bordeaux’s city boundaries on a distinctive combination of gravel, clay and sand soils near the Garonne. The grapes are fermented partly as whole clusters in a combination of wooden vats, concrete vessels and stainless-steel tanks, helping to preserve freshness while adding complexity and texture. Maturation takes place in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, complemented by concrete and amphora to maintain precision and vibrancy.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, venison and other richly flavoured poultry dishes, it also works well with mushroom-based recipes, grilled vegetables and mature cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 30–60 minutes when drinking young to open the floral and fruit aromas; older bottles may benefit from careful, shorter decanting to remove sediment without overexposing the wine.
Producer
Château Les Carmes de Haut-Brion is a historic estate in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is notable for its rare location within the urban fabric of Bordeaux. Its vineyards, close to the Garonne, benefit from a distinctive terroir of gravel, clay and sand. Since Guillaume Pouthier took responsibility for the estate’s style and vinification in 2013, the château has become increasingly recognised for wines that combine Bordeaux depth with freshness, finesse and a contemporary sense of precision.
