Description
Château Léoville Poyferré Saint-Julien 2019 in magnum format is a powerful, classically styled Second Growth Bordeaux from one of the undisputed stars of Saint-Julien. This wine marries generous, ripe fruit with finesse, structure and remarkable aging potential, all amplified by the slower‑maturing magnum bottle. From a highly regarded vintage and an estate that has been on a steady rise in quality, it is a superb choice for the cellar or for a special occasion.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Léoville Poyferré shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue that clings to the sides, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is expressive yet refined, opening with layers of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry, joined by notes of violet, cedar, graphite and baking spices, with more complex nuances of truffle, tobacco leaf and a faint cocoa or espresso edge emerging with air.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, structured Saint-Julien with a core of dense, juicy black fruit wrapped in fine but assertive tannins. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and dark plum are interwoven with savory tones of cigar box, pencil shavings, licorice and subtle toasted oak. The texture is sensuous and polished, yet there is no shortage of power; the wine remains vibrant thanks to fresh acidity and a long, mineral-tinged finish. In magnum, the 2019 has excellent aging potential: it can be approached in its youth after prolonged decanting, but will truly shine after 10–15 years and, in top conditions, continue to develop for 20–30 years or more.
Production
The vineyards of Château Léoville Poyferré lie in the western part of Saint-Julien, in the heart of the Médoc, on classic deep gravel soils over clay and sand that are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux counterparts. The 80 hectares under vine are planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc completing the cépage, all meticulously tended by hand to optimize ripeness and preserve the health of the vines. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, then carefully sorted before vinification. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature‑controlled vats, with gentle extraction to capture both intensity and elegance. The grand vin, Château Léoville Poyferré, is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), allowing the wine to harmonize, gain complexity and integrate its tannins while maintaining its pure, ripe fruit expression.
Food & Serving
This 2019 magnum is a natural partner for richly flavored, classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or other game, and slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragouts, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance between fruit and structure. In its youth, especially in magnum, decant generously for 2–4 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold; with extended bottle age, decant more briefly, mainly to remove sediment, and serve soon after.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré’s roots date back to 1638, when the vast Léoville estate was one of the most important properties in the Médoc and, at the time of the French Revolution, the largest in Saint-Julien. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 ranking, the estate entered a new era in 1920 when it was acquired by the Cuvelier family, who still own and manage it today. Under generations of Cuvelier stewardship, culminating in the modern era with the leadership of Sara Lecompte Cuvelier and her team, the château has undergone a qualitative renaissance and is now considered among the elite of Saint-Julien. With 80 hectares of prime gravel terroir, the estate produces the grand vin Château Léoville Poyferré and its well-regarded second wine Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré, consistently earning high praise from critics and cementing its reputation as one of Bordeaux’s benchmark Second Growths.
