Description
Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is the second wine of the celebrated Château Léoville Poyferré, offering a refined expression of Saint-Julien from the estate’s younger vines. Crafted from the same exceptional terroir as the Grand Vin, this 2015 Magnum combines Cabernet Sauvignon-led structure with plush Merlot fruit and classic Bordeaux complexity. Drikkemoden upon release, yet with the depth to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the deep, polished colour you’d expect from a serious Bordeaux blend. The nose opens with red forest berries, cherry, pepper, cigar box and those unmistakable earthy notes of forest floor that give mature Bordeaux its charm.
On the palate, red berries take the lead—think raspberry, cherry and a touch of pomegranate—followed by tobacco, black pepper and a supple, refined finish. The Magnum format supports slow, graceful development, and the wine should continue to gain nuance over the next 10–15 years.
Production
Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is made from younger vines grown on the estate of Château Léoville Poyferré in Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, so it benefits from the same outstanding terroir as the grand vin. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot reflects the classic Left Bank style, balancing structure, fragrance and depth. While detailed vinification information is not provided, the wine is presented as approachable on release with strong aging potential.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, game, or slow-braised beef dishes, as well as mushroom-based cuisine and hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if enjoying it young to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the historic names of Saint-Julien and a respected estate within Bordeaux’s Left Bank hierarchy. Known for producing wines of elegance, concentration and long aging potential, the château has earned a strong reputation among collectors and Bordeaux lovers alike. Its second wine, Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré, offers a more accessible entry point into the estate’s style without losing the character of this famed terroir.
