Description
Château Léoville-Las Cases 2021 is the flagship Grand Vin of one of Saint-Julien’s most distinguished estates and a Deuxième Cru Classé under the 1855 Classification. Known for its powerful, Cabernet-led style and exceptional longevity, it combines the structure of the Médoc with the elegance and precision characteristic of Saint-Julien.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the 2021 vintage opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite and cedar, complemented by subtle floral and savoury notes. The palate is concentrated yet finely balanced, with fresh acidity, dark berry fruit and a distinctive mineral character. Firm, polished tannins provide a long, persistent finish, while hints of tobacco, spice and pencil lead are likely to emerge with bottle age.
This is a structured vintage that benefits from patience. It can be approached after decanting, but its depth and tannic framework suggest excellent ageing potential over 15–25 years, or longer in a well-stored bottle.
Production
The estate’s vineyards are situated on the gravelly Günzian terraces of Saint-Julien, where excellent drainage and deep gravel soils favour the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grand Vin is produced primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by traditional Bordeaux varieties, with careful selection of fruit from the estate’s best parcels. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with close attention to parcel character before maturation in French oak, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving its freshness and structure.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to rest upright and decanting for approximately two to three hours, particularly when enjoyed young. Its depth and tannic structure make it an excellent partner for roast beef, venison, lamb, duck, côte de boeuf and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Mature hard cheeses can also complement its savoury, mineral character.
Producer
Château Léoville-Las Cases traces its history to the former Léoville estate, which was divided in the nineteenth century. It was recognised as a Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification and is widely regarded as one of the leading estates of Saint-Julien. The property is especially known for its walled Grand Enclos vineyard and for producing wines of remarkable precision, concentration and ageing ability.
