Description
Château Léoville-Las Cases 2021 is the flagship wine of one of Saint-Julien’s most respected estates, renowned for producing Médoc wines of remarkable depth, structure and longevity. From the historic Grand Enclos, this classic Bordeaux combines the refinement of Saint-Julien with the power and gravitas often associated with the finest Pauillac wines. The 2021 vintage offers a particularly traditional, fresh and Cabernet-driven expression.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, joined by graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and subtle floral notes. On the palate, it is composed and finely structured, with concentrated dark fruit, bright acidity and firm yet polished tannins. Hints of spice, pencil lead and earthy minerality add complexity through the finish.
This is a young, serious wine with considerable cellaring potential. While it can be approached after careful decanting, its tannins and layered character are likely to develop beautifully over the next 10–20 years, with the potential to mature further in a good cellar.
Production
The Grand Enclos is situated on well-drained gravel soils close to the Gironde estuary, an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon and a key source of the wine’s freshness, concentration and longevity. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before being vinified parcel by parcel, allowing the estate to preserve the individual character of its vineyard blocks. The wine is matured in French oak, integrating the wood with the fruit and mineral structure over time.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast lamb, beef fillet, venison and other richly flavoured game dishes, it also works well with duck, slow-cooked beef or mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for two to three hours when drinking young to soften the tannins and reveal its aromatic complexity; older bottles should be decanted more gently, primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Léoville-Las Cases is one of the great historic estates of the Médoc and is classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. The estate’s celebrated Grand Enclos, protected by a distinctive stone wall, lies in the heart of Saint-Julien and has long been associated with exceptionally age-worthy, Cabernet-led wines. Under the Delon family, the château has earned a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, precision winemaking and producing some of the most profound wines in the appellation.
