Château Léoville-Las Cases, Saint Julien 2021

Château Léoville-Las Cases 2021 is a serious, Cabernet-led Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates. Known for its exceptional Grand Enclos vineyard and First Growth-like reputation, the château consistently produces wines of remarkable structure, precision and longevity. The 2021 vintage offers a more classical, fresh and restrained expression, with pronounced terroir definition.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in appearance, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite and cedar, complemented by hints of violets, tobacco leaf and subtle spice. The palate is refined and energetic, combining concentrated dark fruit with bright acidity, mineral character and finely detailed tannins. Its impressive length and firm structure point to excellent aging potential; while approachable with extended aeration, it should develop beautifully over the next 15–25 years.

Production
The wine is produced from the château’s Grand Enclos vineyard, a walled site characterised by well-drained Günzian gravel soils over clay and limestone, ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are harvested selectively by hand and vinified with careful parcel selection to preserve freshness and site expression. The wine is traditionally matured in French oak, allowing its concentrated fruit, mineral character and tannic framework to integrate gradually.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison and other richly flavoured game dishes, it also pairs well with beef fillet, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for two to three hours when drinking young to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic complexity; older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only to remove sediment.

Château Léoville-Las Cases is one of the historic estates of Saint-Julien and traces its origins to the former Léoville estate, which was divided in the 19th century. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in the 1855 Classification, it is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s ‘Super Seconds’ and is often compared with the leading First Growths for its quality and cellaring potential. The estate’s distinctive walled Grand Enclos and consistently rigorous winemaking have made it a benchmark for structured, age-worthy Saint-Julien.
