Description
Château Léoville Las Cases 1995 is a benchmark Saint-Julien wine with the depth, structure, and longevity that have made the estate one of Bordeaux’s most revered names. Drawn from one of the Médoc’s most prestigious properties, it is a classic example of why this château is often spoken of in the same breath as First Growths.
Tasting Notes
Now beautifully mature, the 1995 shows a medium garnet core with a touch of brick at the rim. The bouquet opens slowly, revealing baked plums, dried mulberries, and boysenberry preserve, layered with black truffle, Chinese five spice, cigar box, dusty earth, and savory notes of beef drippings and cast-iron pan.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with impressive concentration, plush tannins, and a seamless line of freshness that keeps everything lifted. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with earthy herbs and savory complexity. This is a wine with outstanding aging potential, and while it is already rewarding, it can continue to evolve gracefully for years in the cellar.
Production
Château Léoville Las Cases sits in the northern edge of Saint-Julien, where its famed l’Enclos parcels border Pauillac and the vineyards of Château Latour. The terroir is highly prized for its deep gravel soils and old vines, many between 50 and 80 years of age, which help produce wines of remarkable concentration, precision, and structure. The 1995 vintage is a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, reflecting the estate’s classic style.
Food & Serving
This wine is best enjoyed with equally refined dishes such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, duck breast, game, or slow-braised short ribs. Mature hard cheeses and truffle-based dishes also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours to allow the aromas to open fully and the wine’s texture to soften.
Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Bordeaux’s most respected historic estates and is widely considered among the greatest of the Second Growths from the 1855 classification. Once part of the larger Léoville estate, it has long been associated with exceptional quality, remarkable consistency, and wines capable of very long aging. The Delon family has played a central role in its modern success, with Jean-Hubert Delon continuing the legacy of excellence that has made the château a reference point in Saint-Julien.
