Description

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Bordeaux’s most revered names, often spoken of as the benchmark for 2nd Growth quality in the 1855 classification. The 1989 vintage comes from one of the Médoc’s most sought-after sites, with old vines and a style known for power, longevity, and remarkable precision.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this should show a deep ruby to opaque purple color, still carrying impressive concentration for its age. The nose typically opens with blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, and subtle vanilla tones, layered with savory Bordeaux complexity and a firm, noble structure. On the palate, the wine is rich, opulent, and full-bodied, with ripe fruit wrapped around a dense core of tannin and impressive balance. Even after decades, it may remain tightly wound, but with air it can reveal great depth, length, and the classic Leoville Las Cases combination of elegance and strength. This is a wine with outstanding aging potential and, for many bottles, still room to evolve.

Production
The estate sits in the northern edge of Saint-Julien, close to the Pauillac border and directly beside Château Latour, a location that contributes to its powerful and ageworthy profile. Much of the fruit comes from the famed l’Enclos parcels, planted with old vines on gravelly Médoc soils, and the harvest is carried out with careful selection to preserve balance and concentration. Vinification at the château focuses on extracting depth and structure while maintaining the precision and freshness that define the property’s style.

Food & Serving
Best served with classic dishes that can stand up to a serious Bordeaux, such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, venison, duck breast, or mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for a few hours if the bottle is showing well; older bottles may benefit from a gentler decant just before serving to separate sediment while preserving aroma.

Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Médoc, with a history shaped by the division of the original Léoville property in the 19th century. The Delon family has played a defining role in its modern reputation, especially under Michel Delon, whose stewardship helped cement the estate’s global standing. Today, it remains one of Bordeaux’s most admired names, consistently producing wines of first-growth ambition and exceptional longevity.
