Description
Les Forts de Latour 2019 is the renowned second wine of Château Latour, one of Pauillac’s most distinguished estates. Crafted from carefully selected fruit grown on the château’s exceptional gravel terroirs, it offers much of Latour’s signature power and structure in a more approachable style, while still possessing excellent cellaring potential. The cuvée was first produced in the 1960s and has since become one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after second wines.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in appearance, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, violets and cedar, complemented by subtle notes of graphite, tobacco and sweet spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe dark-fruit flavours, polished tannins and a fresh mineral character typical of Pauillac. The finish is long, structured and persistent, with hints of dark chocolate and cigar box emerging with air.
Although approachable with decanting, the 2019 vintage has the structure to develop beautifully over the next 15–25 years, gaining further complexity and savoury depth in bottle.
Production
The grapes are sourced from Château Latour’s gravel-rich vineyards in Pauillac, where well-draining soils encourage deep-rooted vines and naturally concentrated fruit. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and cellar. Fermentation takes place plot by plot in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, including a significant proportion of new oak, to integrate the wine’s power with added finesse and complexity.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison and other richly flavoured game, Les Forts de Latour also pairs well with truffle dishes, mushroom sauces and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours when drinking young to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic detail; older bottles should be decanted carefully, primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Latour is one of Bordeaux’s historic First Growth estates, situated in the heart of Pauillac and renowned for producing wines of remarkable power, precision and longevity. Its vineyards, dominated by gravelly Médoc soils and centred around the iconic tower overlooking the Gironde, have been cultivated for centuries. As one of the region’s most prestigious producers, Château Latour is particularly celebrated for the depth and ageing potential of its Grand Vin, while Les Forts de Latour is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s finest and most serious second wines.
