Château Latour, Pauillac Les Forts de Latour CC 2018

Les Forts de Latour is the prestigious second wine of Château Latour, one of Pauillac’s most historic and renowned estates. The 2018 vintage combines the deep, structured character associated with the château with a slightly more approachable profile, offering an excellent introduction to the Latour style while retaining considerable cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the wine opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, followed by notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco and subtle spice. The palate is full-bodied and finely focused, with concentrated dark fruit, fresh acidity and a firm yet polished tannic structure. A savoury, mineral finish adds length and complexity. Although enjoyable with decanting, this vintage should develop beautifully over the next 15–20 years.

Production
The grapes are sourced from carefully selected plots in and around Château Latour’s Pauillac vineyards, including younger vines and parcels outside the estate’s historic Enclos. Pauillac’s gravel-rich soils provide excellent drainage and encourage deep-rooted vines, while the Gironde estuary helps moderate the maritime climate. Grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels. The final blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after decanting for approximately 1–2 hours, particularly while the wine is young. Its structured palate pairs especially well with roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, duck with a rich sauce and mature hard cheeses. With further bottle age, gentler dishes such as braised beef or mushroom-based preparations will complement its developing savoury character.

Château Latour traces its history back to the 14th century and is one of Bordeaux’s five First Growths classified in 1855. Based in Pauillac, the estate is celebrated for producing powerful, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines from gravelly Médoc soils. Les Forts de Latour was introduced as a second wine in the 1960s and has since established its own reputation as one of Bordeaux’s most respected second wines, offering the estate’s hallmark precision, depth and longevity.
