Description
Château Latour 2013 is a distinguished Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates and a First Growth of the 1855 Classification. Produced in a challenging but carefully managed vintage, it reflects Latour’s signature combination of deep Cabernet character, Médoc elegance and a firm, age-worthy structure, while offering a more approachable profile than many of the château’s most powerful years.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with developing garnet highlights, this wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, accompanied by cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, it is structured yet balanced, showing concentrated dark fruit, fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins, with characteristic Pauillac notes of pencil lead, cassis and savoury spice.
The 2013 vintage is generally more restrained and fresh than the outstanding 2009 or 2010 vintages, making it comparatively accessible in its youth. It can be enjoyed now with decanting, while careful cellaring should allow further development of tobacco, leather and earthy complexity over the medium term.
Production
The vineyards of Château Latour lie close to the Gironde estuary, where gravelly soils provide excellent drainage and retain warmth, while the river helps moderate the local climate. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard management and selective harvesting, followed by careful fermentation and maturation in oak. As with other great Pauillac wines, the blend is centred on Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by traditional Médoc varieties, though the precise composition may vary by vintage.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to acclimatise gradually. Decant for around one to two hours to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic detail, taking care with older bottles. Its structure and savoury depth make it an excellent match for roast beef, lamb, venison, beef tenderloin, duck with rich jus and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Latour is one of Bordeaux’s most historically important estates, with origins dating back centuries and a reputation firmly established by its status as a Premier Cru in the 1855 Classification. Located in Pauillac, the estate is recognised for its grand, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines, produced from the celebrated Enclos vineyard around the château. Latour remains one of the Médoc’s benchmark properties, admired for its precision, power and ability to express the gravelly terroir of the Gironde.
