Description
Château Latour 2009 is a landmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s five First Growth estates. Combining exceptional concentration with remarkable balance, this vintage is celebrated for its powerful Cabernet Sauvignon character, deep structure and impressive long-term ageing potential. The château’s history dates back centuries, and its status as a First Growth was confirmed in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to almost opaque in colour, the wine opens with an intense and complex nose of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum, layered with cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, violet and subtle spice. With time in the glass, further notes of leather, cigar box and earthy truffle begin to emerge.
The palate is full-bodied and remarkably concentrated, yet precise and refined. Ripe dark fruit is supported by firm, polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish marked by cassis, pencil lead and finely integrated oak. Château Latour 2009 has the structure to develop gracefully for several decades, while careful decanting can already reveal considerable complexity.
Production
The vineyards of Château Latour lie in Pauillac, close to the Gironde estuary, where deep gravel soils provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to develop deep roots. The gravel also retains heat, helping the grapes achieve full ripeness. Grapes are traditionally harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by extended maturation in French oak. The final blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by the estate’s traditional Bordeaux varieties.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for richly flavoured dishes such as roast beef, prime rib, lamb, venison and slow-cooked beef cheeks. It also works beautifully with truffled preparations, wild mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for two to three hours before serving, or open earlier for a slower, more gradual unveiling of its aromas and structure.
Producer
Château Latour is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates, situated in the Pauillac appellation of the Médoc. Its iconic tower, built in the 17th century, has become a symbol of the property, while the estate’s vineyards have long been renowned for producing deeply structured, age-worthy wines. Recognised as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855, Château Latour remains one of the defining names of the Left Bank and a benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux.
