Description

Château Latour Martillac 2020 is a powerful and polished red from Pessac-Léognan, a Bordeaux appellation renowned for its gravelly terroirs and age-worthy wines. Its deep colour, concentrated fruit and distinctive notes of spice reflect both the character of the vintage and the estate’s long-standing winemaking tradition. The château takes its name from the medieval tower in its courtyard, a remnant of a 12th-century fortress once used to control the route between Bordeaux and Toulouse.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, dark purple colour. Its intense nose opens with aromas of blackcurrant and ripe cherry, followed by hints of liquorice, spice and subtle earthy complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied, powerful and juicy, supported by firm but well-integrated tannins and a persistent finish. The 2020 vintage offers both concentration and freshness, giving the wine the structure to develop beautifully in bottle. It can be enjoyed after some aeration, but should gain further complexity over the next 8–15 years when properly stored.

Production
The estate’s vineyards are rooted in the authentic gravel soils of the Graves area, with clay and sand contributing balance and depth. The grapes are harvested carefully at optimum ripeness, traditionally by hand, before being selected and vinified parcel by parcel. Fermentation and maturation are carried out with the aim of preserving the fruit while building structure and complexity, including ageing in oak barrels. The red blend is traditionally based on Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and smaller proportions of other Bordeaux varieties.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison and other richly flavoured red meats, this Pessac-Léognan also works well with duck, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. The wine can be opened 1–2 hours before serving; decanting is recommended for the 2020 vintage, particularly when enjoyed in its youth, to soften the tannins and allow its aromas to fully emerge.

Producer
Château Latour Martillac has a history reaching back to the medieval fortress whose surviving tower still stands in the château’s courtyard. The estate attracted the attention of Bordeaux merchant Édouard Kressmann in 1871, while his son Alfred acquired it in 1930 and gave it its present name. Today, Tristan and Loïc Kressmann continue the family tradition, working with leading Bordeaux oenologists to express the estate’s distinctive terroir. The château is an established and respected name in Pessac-Léognan, recognised for producing both red and white wines of character and longevity.
