Description
Château Langoa-Barton 2018 is a classic Saint-Julien red from one of the Médoc’s most respected estates. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in the 1855 classification, the château is renowned for producing structured, age-worthy wines that combine the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the elegance typical of Saint-Julien.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with youthful purple highlights. Its nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and cedar, complemented by notes of graphite, tobacco and subtle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, finely balanced finish. The 2018 vintage has the structure and fruit concentration to develop beautifully over the next 15–25 years, while careful decanting will make it approachable in its youth.
Production
The vineyards of Langoa-Barton lie in the gravelly terroir of Saint-Julien, where well-drained soils encourage deep-rooted vines and favour the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon. The blend is traditionally Cabernet Sauvignon-led, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are carefully selected and vinified parcel by parcel, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats before maturation in French oak barrels, a proportion of which is new, to add complexity while preserving the wine’s distinctive freshness and structure.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison and other richly flavoured game dishes, it also pairs well with steak, duck and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when drinking young to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic depth; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Langoa-Barton has been part of the Barton family since 1821, when Hugh Barton acquired the estate. The château remains closely associated with Château Léoville Barton and is one of the rare classified Bordeaux estates to have remained under the same family ownership for generations. Its wines are highly regarded for their traditional style, remarkable consistency and ability to mature gracefully in bottle.
