Description
Château Lanessan Haut-Médoc 2020 is a classic Left Bank Bordeaux red from an estate situated close to the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines the structure and freshness associated with Médoc wines with approachable fruit, making it an appealing choice both now and for further cellaring. The estate has a long history in the Médoc and is recognised as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with ripe Cabernet-driven fruit, refreshing acidity and well-defined tannins. Hints of dark chocolate and finely integrated oak add depth to the finish. It can be enjoyed from around 2025, while careful cellaring should allow it to develop further over the next 8–12 years.
Production
The vineyards of Château Lanessan benefit from the gravelly soils typical of the Médoc, which provide excellent drainage and encourage deep-rooted vines while retaining heat during the growing season. The 2020 vintage was harvested at good levels of ripeness, with parcels picked separately according to grape variety and maturity. Fermentation and maceration are carried out with the aim of preserving fresh fruit and building a firm but balanced structure, followed by maturation in oak to add complexity without overwhelming the wine.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to breathe for 30–60 minutes; a short decant is recommended for young bottles, while mature examples can be poured more gently to preserve their character. Its combination of ripe fruit and savoury structure pairs beautifully with roast beef, lamb, steak frites, grilled veal and hearty mushroom dishes. It is also a natural match for mature hard cheeses such as Comté or farmhouse cheddar.
Producer
Château Lanessan is a historic Médoc estate whose origins date back to the 18th century. Located in the commune of Cussac-Fort-Médoc, near the Saint-Julien vineyards, the château has built a strong reputation for producing traditionally styled, Cabernet-led wines with dependable ageing potential. Its Cru Bourgeois Supérieur classification reflects the estate’s standing within the Haut-Médoc and its commitment to quality.
