Description
Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2023 is the second wine of Château Lagrange, a respected Third Growth estate in Saint-Julien. It offers the château’s classic Left Bank character in a more approachable style, combining polished fruit, fresh structure and the refined elegance associated with this celebrated Médoc appellation.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by subtle violet, cedar and delicate spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with ripe dark fruit, supple tannins and a refreshing line of acidity. A gentle mineral and savoury nuance adds complexity to the finish. It is enjoyable in its youth after a little aeration, while careful cellaring should allow it to develop greater softness and depth over the next several years.
Production
Produced from the vineyards of Château Lagrange in Saint-Julien, where gravelly soils provide excellent drainage and help the vines ripen slowly and evenly. The blend is based on the traditional Médoc varieties, led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. Grapes are carefully selected and vinified parcel by parcel before maturation in oak, resulting in a wine that balances the estate’s structured style with the generous accessibility expected of a second wine.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C. Les Fiefs de Lagrange pairs particularly well with roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, duck, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not essential for a young bottle, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help open the wine and soften its youthful structure.
Producer
Château Lagrange is one of Saint-Julien’s historic estates and was classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 classification of the Médoc. The property was acquired by the Japanese group Suntory in 1983, which invested extensively in the vineyards and winery while preserving the château’s Bordeaux identity. Today, Lagrange is recognised for producing precise, elegant and age-worthy wines that express the distinctive gravelly terroir of Saint-Julien.
