Description
Château Lagrange 2023 is a refined red Bordeaux from Saint-Julien, a Médoc appellation celebrated for producing wines that combine Cabernet-driven structure with elegance and longevity. Classified as a Troisième Cru Classé in the historic 1855 classification, Lagrange is recognised for its precise, modern style and excellent ability to develop in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the 2023 vintage opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet, cedar and subtle spice. On the palate, it is fresh and well-structured, with concentrated dark fruit, polished tannins and a balanced mineral character. A persistent finish brings notes of graphite and gentle oak. While approachable with decanting, the wine should gain further complexity over the next 8–15 years and can mature well beyond that in a suitable cellar.
Production
The Château’s vineyards lie on the gravelly soils of Saint-Julien, where excellent drainage and the underlying clay help the vines retain freshness during the growing season. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Petit Verdot. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested parcel by parcel before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, to refine the wine without overpowering its fruit and structure.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after decanting for approximately 1–2 hours, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth. Château Lagrange pairs naturally with roast lamb, beef fillet, venison and other richly flavoured red meats, while its structure also complements mature hard cheeses and classic dishes such as beef tenderloin with mushroom sauce.
Producer
Château Lagrange is one of Saint-Julien’s historic estates and has held its Third Growth classification since 1855. The property underwent a major renewal after its acquisition by Suntory in 1983, including extensive vineyard and cellar improvements that helped reinforce its reputation for consistency and precision. Today, Château Lagrange is regarded as one of the leading and most distinctive estates of the Saint-Julien appellation.
