Description
Château Lagrange 2021 is a refined Saint-Julien red from one of the Médoc’s historic Third Growth estates, offering the classic combination of Cabernet Sauvignon structure, aromatic precision and polished oak. The cooler 2021 vintage highlights the château’s elegant, restrained style, with freshness and balance taking centre stage over sheer power.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet, cedar and subtle graphite notes. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with fresh acidity, finely textured tannins and flavours of dark berries, cassis and spice. A composed, savoury finish brings a touch of mineral character and well-integrated oak.
The 2021 Château Lagrange is approachable with decanting, but its firm structure and freshness suggest very good medium- to long-term ageing potential. It should develop additional earthy, tobacco and cedar nuances over the next 8–15 years when carefully cellared.
Production
The estate’s vineyards lie in the gravel-rich terroirs of Saint-Julien, where well-drained soils encourage deep-rooted vines and favour the production of structured, aromatic Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are harvested selectively according to plot and ripeness, then vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is matured in French oak, allowing the tannins and fruit to integrate while preserving the vintage’s freshness and precision.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gently to temperature. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours when drinking young to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatics. Its structure makes it an excellent partner for roast beef, lamb, venison, duck, grilled entrecôte and classic dishes with mushrooms or truffle.
Producer
Château Lagrange is a historic estate in the Saint-Julien appellation and was classified as a Troisième Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. The property has been owned by Suntory since 1983, under whose stewardship the vineyards and winery have undergone extensive modernisation while retaining the estate’s Médoc identity. Today, Lagrange is recognised for producing precise, age-worthy wines that combine Saint-Julien’s classical structure with a polished, contemporary style.
