Château Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac Carruades de Lafite 2022

Carruades de Lafite is the distinguished second wine of Château Lafite-Rothschild, one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates and a First Growth of the 1855 Classification. Produced from the estate’s Pauillac vineyards, the 2022 vintage combines the château’s hallmark refinement with a slightly more approachable expression, offering depth, silkiness and notable aromatic finesse.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-red colour with youthful purple highlights. Its expressive nose opens with ripe blackcurrant and raspberry, complemented by subtle minty nuances and the polished, refined character associated with Pauillac. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet silky, balancing concentration and strength with freshness and elegance. Fine-grained tannins support a long, graceful finish. Although appealing in its youth, the wine should gain further complexity with bottle age and has the structure to develop well over the next 10–20 years, depending on storage conditions.

Production
Carruades de Lafite is made from grapes grown in the gravelly soils of Pauillac, where excellent drainage and the region’s maritime climate favour the production of structured, aromatic Cabernet-based wines. Following careful harvesting and selection, fermentation takes place in a combination of wooden vats, concrete tanks and stainless-steel tanks. Maceration lasts approximately 20 days, followed by malolactic fermentation and 16 months of maturation in French oak barrels. The wine is produced according to the traditional Bordeaux method, with the final blend reflecting the vintage and the character of the estate’s vineyards.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, veal, duck breast and richly flavoured mushroom dishes, Carruades de Lafite also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. The 2022 can be enjoyed after a short decant of around 1–2 hours to reveal its aromatic detail and soften its youthful structure; older bottles should be decanted carefully and for a shorter period, primarily to remove any sediment.
